FREE: Chicago SRI/ESG – Opportunity Zones
Thursday, June 27, 2019 7:45-9:30 A.M.
Location: University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center, 450 Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago, IL

Our topic will be Opportunity Zones, which came in to being as a result of the 12/2017 Federal tax legislation. Opportunity Zones were designed to increase the flow of investments to needy communities throughout the country in order to create new jobs and businesses and foster economic growth.

Recently, there has been a lot of chatter about the possibilities and the challenges for advisors and consultants using Opportunity Zones for taxable investors. For those investors interested in impact, questions about types of impact (good, bad, or none) and impact measurement exist.

Our guest speakers are: Ben Bornstein of Arctaris Capital; Karen Muchin of BRicK Partners; and Matt Reilein, of National Equity Fund.

Some of the issues that we will cover include:

  • A more thorough explanation of what Opportunity Zones are, why they were created, and where they are located
  • The economic incentives that Opportunity Zones provide to investors in order to attract investment capital
  • How community impact resulting from the investments is measured
  • The types of investors pursuing Opportunity Zone investments, and the types of investment vehicles that exist

A request: If you consider yourself very knowledgeable about Opportunity Zones, please let us know when you RSVP, so that we can identify you as a resource for those who are less familiar with them.

A second request: we’ve had several people forward to us Opportunity Zone-related resources – articles, reports, white papers, etc. If you are aware of good resources that we should consider including in a follow-up email after our discussion, please forward them.

Finally, for those of you who would like to be a little more familiar with Opportunity Zones before our discussion, Suzanne Shier of Northern Trust (and a former guest speaker) has written a good explanatory piece here.

Please RSVP via reply email to Dan Nielsen at dnielsen@greatlakesadvisors.com by this Friday June 21st if you are able to join us.
